Platy Pals

🐠 a journal entry

Welcome to the Platy Daycare Center

May 24, 2026

So.
We’ve escalated.

What started as “aww cute little fish” has now evolved into a full-scale aquatic daycare operation sitting next to what I can only describe as the original platy brothel.

In my latest video, I finally show the fry tank I set up specifically for all the tiny freeloaders White Panda keeps launching into existence. It’s smaller than the main tank, but honestly somehow contains significantly more chaos per gallon.

And against all odds, I managed to get most of those little sons of bitches transferred over safely.

Some.

Not all.

Because trying to net baby fry out of a planted tank is like trying to catch sentient confetti with emotional support issues.

The Ages in This Tank Are All Over the Place

Based on the size differences, I’m pretty convinced we’re looking at several separate pregnancies represented in this underwater daycare center.

Some of the fry are:

  • nearly community-tank ready
  • bold enough to swim out in the open
  • already looking like miniature actual fish

Meanwhile others still look like:

microscopic sperm with eyeballs

Nature is beautiful.

Disturbing.
But beautiful.

Surprisingly Minimal Cannibalism

Honestly, the hiding setup seems to be working better than expected.

Between:

  • floating plants
  • moss balls
  • ground cover plants
  • little caves and hideouts

…the tiny fry have enough places to disappear that the bigger fish haven’t completely turned the tank into an all-you-can-eat buffet.

Which is genuinely impressive considering platys appear to parent using the philosophy:

“Good luck out there, tiny stranger.”

Important Reminder: I Am Absolutely Winging This

I would like to remind everyone watching at home that I am extremely far from being some kind of professional fry keeper.

Like… laughably far.

Most of my fishkeeping strategy currently consists of:

  1. panic
  2. buying more plants
  3. googling things at concerning hours
  4. emotional support moss balls

And somehow it’s working well enough that I now apparently have locally interesting fish genetics happening in my home office.

While buying yet another batch of moss balls at my local fish store, I mentioned the ongoing population explosion.

That’s when they informed me:

  • the mom, a panda, who i now call White Panda because no imagination, is apparently somewhat uncommon in platy circles
  • the dad is a tuxedo red
  • together they produced orange panda platys

Which apparently people are actually interested in.

There are even a few local collectors in the area who like unusual livebearer color combinations.

So naturally this raises several important questions.

Am I:

  • a fish farmer?
  • an aquatic adoption agency?
  • the unwilling owner of a tiny selective breeding program?
  • one successful Facebook Marketplace post away from supplementing my income via aquatic prostitution?

The answer at this point seems to be:

possibly all of the above

Final Thoughts From the Manager of This Establishment

I started this hobby wanting a peaceful little aquarium.

Now I’m overseeing a rapidly expanding platy civilization with housing developments, nurseries, and what may soon become a local trade economy.

And honestly?

I kind of love it.

Even if every time I walk past the tank there’s another tiny orange eyeball staring back at me like:

“mother says it’s my turn to need brine shrimp.”
